Advanced Master Sommelier General Knowledge Level 1 Practice Exam

Sonoma Valley Chardonnay is known for its diverse expressions that often include aromas of ripe yellow apple, pineapple, butter, and baking spice. This variety thrives in the climate and terroir of Sonoma Valley, which supports the development of rich fruit flavors. The interaction with oak barrels during aging is significant for Chardonnay, as it can impart buttery notes from malolactic fermentation and additional complexity from the spices that come from new or toasted oak.

In contrast, Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc typically emphasizes crisp acidity and herbaceous qualities, often featuring citrus and green apple notes rather than the rich fruit and buttery characteristics found in Chardonnay. Alsace Gewürztraminer leans toward lush floral and spice profiles, with less emphasis on the butter and ripe apple aromas. Finally, Friuli Pinot Grigio is known for its light, crisp clean profile, showcasing minerality and pear over the richer flavors associated with Chardonnay.

Thus, the profile of aromas mentioned in the question aligns closely with what is most characteristic of Sonoma Valley Chardonnay, highlighting its richness and complexity.
